Abandoned Boat

Old abandoned boats can be found along the shore adjacent to Thane Road (a roughly 6 mile road that runs south, from downtown Juneau, adjacent to Gastineau Channel). A portion of Douglas, Alaska, which is located across the channel, can be seen in the background.

Seward's Day

Alaska state and Juneau city employees had the day off today in honor of Seward’s Day, but it was business as usual for many local businesses, federal employees, and schools. (Pictured here is a look toward the intersection of Seward Street and Front Street)

What is Seward’s Day? In 1867, Secretary of State William H. Seward negotiated with Russia to purchase Alaska for 7.2 million dollars (2 cents an acre). Many disagreed with the decision calling it Seward’s Folly or Seward’s Icebox. Personally, I think he was a great visionary.

Eaglecrest

Since the kids are on Spring Break, I took them skiing up at Eaglecrest today. They had a great time skiing with their friends on Hooter, while I took photos, read, and wished I could go skiing too.

The surprise snow we received over night didn't stop these girls from getting out their snow shovels and prepping Adair-Kennedy field to play some soccer.

Sea Anemones

At low tide it’s fascinating to explore the intertidal zone. When I came across these sea anemones, I felt like I had hit the mother lode. I’ve never seen such a variety of colors in this small of a tide pool.

All-Eagle Totem Pole

In 1993, a "Raven" totem pole was erected on the campus of the University of Alaska-Southeast (Juneau). In order to provide social and spiritual balance between the Eagle and Raven clans of the Tlingit and Haida cultures, an “All-Eagle” totem pole has been carved by TJ and Joe Young, of Hydaburg, Alaska. The forty-five feet, red cedar pole is from Prince of Wales Island and was donated by the Sealaska Corporation. Its final length is thirty-six feet. A traditional ceremony will be held when the “All-Eagle” totem is raised this spring.

Plowing Egan Drive

The National Weather Service issued a “Winter Storm Warning” yesterday. They predicted we would receive 8 to 12 inches of snow by midnight, but we didn’t come close. I have mixed emotions about this one. I love the snow and would love for Juneau to receive more, but, on the other hand, it’s that much less we have to plow or shovel.

Everyone was beginning to think that spring was here to stay with the warmer than normal weather we were receiving. Guess we were wrong.

High Winds

Early Friday morning we had beautiful blue sky. The mountains were covered with fresh snow, and we see for miles. By about 9 a.m. the winds had picked up and it had started snowing. Saturday morning, it was evident that we had received some strong gusts over night. These Mendenhall Valley residents had the top of a large spruce tree fall on their van. Thankfully the damage wasn’t worse and no one was injured.
