Fireweed

Fireweed (Epilobium argustifolium) can be found starting to bloom around Juneau. It is a deep-rooted rhizome that is able to reestablish itself quickly after forest fires, which is the reason for it’s common name.

Driving back to Kenai from Homer, I saw an amazing field of fireweed. Of course, I had to stop and take it in. I was surprised that some of the fireweed was over 4-feet tall! Those are some of my favorite Alaska pics.

Lovely to see fireweed in detail. So often we don't look beyond the banks of vivid pink to the individual flowers.
